Interview: Hollywood Undead Winner Loves Indaba Music

Hey Kayv, Congratulations on your Grand Prize Win! What brought you to Indaba Music?
I saw this contest posted on the Hollywood Undead fan page. That’s where I found about all that is Indaba Music. What I really liked about the site was that the staff members are also musicians and not some people in suits, you know what I mean?

Yes, definitely. We have a very diverse staff here at Indaba Music and we understand where our members are coming from.

What do you do for living?
Right now I am a college student. In the music world I’m a rapper, rhythm guitarist, intermediate keyboard player and I love producing. Especially rap/hip hop music and mashing other genres with it.

Can you tell us a bit about your experience in the Hollywood Undead Opportunity? What was it like to work with the material?

As the original song came out I really liked it and I was like listening to the whole album everyday. This song was one of it’s kind “HAPPY” SUICIDE SONG. I just remixed with a hip hop interpretation of how the song would have sounded. The lyrics of the song were serious,  so first I listened to the acapella to try to figure out the emotion of the song. Then I found the phrases which were catchy like “GONE AGAIN.” I made the main hook out of it and it made sense.

The rest was strings and piano which is superior in making sad serious songs. I added the sub bass (not kick drums) which gave it that edgy sound with ear piercing snare with hi hats playing in the background.

I didn’t use any of the original sound which they provided. I PRODUCED THE WHOLE SOUND FROM SCRATCH! and in the end it came out good.

My motto is “always add realism and catchiness to the song so it stays in your head”. That’s what I aim for and the most important part are the emotions. That’s what made Micheal Jackson famous and every other super popular star in the main stream music.
